What Does The Fox Say?
What Does The Fox Say? Luke 13:32
I couldn’t sleep. I was either stressed about work or overly excited about the fishing to commence. Or both. So I decided to walk. Our rental was only a block from the trailhead to hike up to see Doc Holliday’s grave. I had always wanted to see it so this early morning was the time.
Turns out the City of Glenwood Springs knows he is buried up there and they don’t know where exactly. There is a marker. It’s just not exactly where he is buried. It was still interesting and a good short hike to wake up my legs. On the way down, the universe sent a fox who approached me like it vaguely knew me. We stopped only 20 feet from each other and of course I thought “what does the fox say? Ring-ding-ding…” The electronic pop song echoing in my brain. To my surprise, the fox said nothing. Yet there we were face to face and only I was speaking.
“Hey buddy, what do you need? What is your name? You’re not going to attack me are you?” Then in a flash the fox scampered off. Even though it was a wild creature I sensed it did want something. It wanted food and was checking me out for snacks. I’m sure in its guile it had won that face off many times with other tourists. I was just devoid of treats.
In the Book of Luke Jesus refers to Herod as being a fox. Sampson used 300 foxes to punish the Philistines. That Tuesday morning, God used a fox to remind me each of us is trying to tell each other something even in silence. Perhaps the world is telling us they are hungry or they need shelter? Perhaps the world is expressing they need medical care or intervention? Or perhaps the people we meet demonstrate they want to know about a Savior? Whatever it is, what does the Fox say and are you and I listening?
We caught a lot of great trout later that day. I shared photos of a few on social media. However it’s the fox that has stuck in my mind two weeks later. What does the fox say and are you and I doing our best to help as needed despite their guile? Are we paying attention to how we can help each other on our walk? The next time, I’ll walk with snacks.
